Effort & Surrender
Effort & Surrender is a series of drawings made using graphite, embroidery, and pierced paper. Multiple layers of translucent Sekishu and Mulberry papers are used to veil parts of the drawings, creating the effect of shadows fading away. The acts of drawing, embroidering, and piercing alter the surfaces of these thin but strong papers - no longer smooth, wrinkles serve as memories.
This is a place between effort and surrender. This is falling into a moment to notice a quietly fading shadow. This is an intersection – a particular place at a particular instant in time. An absence that is light, airy, and tenuous. It is honest and temporary.
These are the words felt in the body as you notice them pouring out of your mouth. They do not strive to be anything more than they are. Shadows fill the soul; the words fill your body like air.
This is a delicate memory – as ephemeral as the shadow. It is barely detectable but somehow persistent. A reminder that time stops, only to suddenly rush again.
